Few things beat a sunrise over the dunes with a fresh, hot coffee in your hand. With a self-heating portable espresso maker, you don't need a stove, kettle or generator – just water, coffee and a charged battery. Here's how to get it right.
1. Charge everything before you leave
Charge your OutIn fully at home. Heating cold water uses the most battery, so if you're going for a weekend, a power bank or a car USB-C charger keeps you topped up. Nano runs on 5V/3A (15 W or more); Mino fast-charges at 30 W.
2. Pack the right coffee
Capsules are the easiest option in the sand – no spills, no mess. If you prefer fresh grounds, grind at home (or bring the OutIn Fino) and pack doses in small airtight containers: about 6–8 g per shot for the Nano.
3. Bring good water
Use bottled or filtered water. Mineral-heavy water builds up scale over time. Fill to around 50 ml for the best crema.
4. Keep your gear out of the sun
The desert gets hot fast. Store your machine, batteries and coffee in the shade or in an insulated bag, and never leave electronics in a closed car in summer. The Mino is sealed to IP67 and built to handle the heat, but every battery lasts longer when it stays cool.
5. Pre-heat for a better shot
If you have hot water from a flask, use it – your machine will brew faster and save battery for more cups.
6. Clean up the easy way
Run a short water-only cycle after your last shot and wipe the outside. Pack the used capsules or grounds out with you.
